Nestled in the picturesque Speyside region of Scotland, Speyburn Distillery holds a unique charm that resonates with discerning palates worldwide. Established in 1897, this distillery has been crafting exceptional single-malt Scotch whiskies, offering a taste of Scotland’s rich heritage to whisky aficionados across the globe.
After 126 years of discreetly producing award-winning single malt whiskies, Speyburn Distillery in Rothes made a historic move in August 2023 by welcoming visitors for the first time. This decision followed the success of exclusive events held during the ‘Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival’ in 2023.
Within months of opening its doors, Speyburn garnered enthusiastic praise and was honored with the esteemed ‘Best New Event’ award at the festival for its behind-the-scenes tours and tastings.
The distillery’s name, derived from the majestic River Spey, connects with audiences who appreciate nature and its influences on the craft. It is the only distillery to use the fresh water of the Granty Burn, a tributary of the River Spey famed for its exceptional purity, which runs close to the distillery site and imparts Speyburn whiskies with their distinctive character and flavor.
Incredibly picturesque, the distillery is famous as the most photographed in Scotland. Officially opened in 1898, the building’s architect was Charles C. Doig, who introduced the iconic pagoda design to Scottish distilleries. Speyburn Distillery has embraced an environment-friendly approach to distilling, aligned with global sustainability practices.
Through a comprehensive plan focusing on water stewardship, energy reduction and co-product management, sustainability remains a core value of the distillery. Enhancements to reduce Speyburn’s carbon footprint have resulted in significant energy savings. This commitment includes implementing a more energy-efficient distillation system.
The distillery has reduced energy consumption by 30%, and 100% of spent lees and washing water are processed in the CORDe plant, with 90% of the water from pot ale returned to the River Spey.
