Following a pilot in 2024, Johnnie Walker has officially launched its newest permanent expression, Black Ruby, in global travel retail worldwide. Described as a “sweeter” blend that stays true to the brand’s flagship Black Label, the new expression marks Dr Emma Walker’s first innovative core range blend since assuming the role of master blender in early 2022.
The backbone malt whisky for the blend comes from Diageo’s Roseisle Distillery. Other distilleries contributing to the Scotch whisky blend include Clynelish, Glenkinchie, Cardhu, Cameronbridge and Caol Ila, the latter of which contributes to the whisky’s lightly smoky character.
The blend includes Roseisle whiskies aged in first-fill red wine casks. Other casks used to mature the blend components include Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry-seasoned casks, as well as ex-Bourbon barrels. The result is a “bold, berry and dark fruit-led blend” aimed at whisky novices as well as connoisseurs and cocktail enthusiasts.
The whisky is offered at 40% ABV and was rolled out worldwide in March, with a suggested retail price of £35 (US$45).
